Haare / Hair

Straight, curly, light, dense, thin, thick, blonde or brunette - from short to long, hairstyles have always been an extension of a person's character. When worn in a conservative or revolutionary manner, they can also often serve to underpin a political statement, while many historical and contemporary personalities can actually only be recognised by their hairstyle.

The artist and collector, Regine Chossy, is an admirer of all types of hair and makes no distinction between human and animal, beard or pubic hair. She is fascinated by it in all its forms and nuances. She draws a line between this and her early childhood experiences. Her mother's Russian fur, for example, which she was wrapped up in when she cried. Or boldly gripping onto her father's chest hair - both memories of security and connection. Regine Chossy connects her fascination with how hair feels to her. "I love the way it feels - when I stroke, ruffle, scrunch or pull it, when short stubble tickles the palms of my hands."

An academy party in 1977 finally brought her passion out into the open when, late on in proceedings, she asked her fellow party-goers for donations of their hair. Depending on how generous they were inclined to be, she received individual hairs, strands or entire tufts. This went on to form the cornerstone of her unusual passion for collecting, which continues to this day. Some specimens have sad stories to tell, while others have travelled entire continents and whenever an opportunity for an exhibition arises, she looks for suitable exhibits from the suitcases and boxes in her studio cellar. She also uses hair from hairdressing salons to create sculptural installations.

A bright blue comb running through wavy, dirty blonde hair.
A black and white photograph of a man with a beard, partially covered by a swirl of light-colored hair, lies on a blue surface beside a handwritten name "A. RAINBR."
A close-up of a broken beige comb covered in strands of brown and blonde hair.
A clump of light brown, reddish hair on a gray surface with a dark shadow and dark background.
A tangled mass of dark hair, some strands brown and some gray, sits on a gray surface with dramatic lighting.
A clump of blonde hair with a small coil of hair next to it, casting a shadow on a purple surface.
A clump of brown hair tied together, with loose strands around it, against a purple background.
A bristly brown bundle tied with string, resembling a whisk or an organic broom, against a gradient background of pink and purple.
A lock of reddish-brown curly hair spilling out of crumpled parchment paper with a handwritten signature.
A luxurious golden hair adornment wrapped around a section of dark brown hair.
A colorful gift bag with a red doll's wig tied with a pink rubber band sticking out.
An open wooden box with carved floral designs, containing a lock of dark brown hair and a purple felt lining on the lid.
A small bundle of reddish-brown hair peeks out of a half-open, creased white envelope with red and blue stripes along the edge.
Pile of wavy brown hair wrapped in crumpled lavender paper on a dark background.
A small, torn white paper is suspended by a string, with a curled lock of hair inside and handwritten notes on its side, casting a shadow on a purple surface.
Various items, including a handwritten note, a packet of hair, and a playing card, are laid out on a dark surface.
