In der Helmstedter Straße mitten im Wilmersdorfer Kiez des alten West-Berlins, wo schon Erich Kästner, Kurt Tucholsky oder Anna Seghers wohnten, hängt an einem Altbau ein unscheinbares Schild mit etlichen Lippenstiften: „Lippenstiftmuseum“. Das einzige seiner Art weltweit. Der Museumsdirektor ist, wen wunderts, ein Freund des guten Aussehens und ein Virtuose der Antlitzverschönerung. Es gibt kaum eine Berühmtheit, die nicht nähere Bekanntschaft mit seinen Schminkpinseln und Make-Up-Schwämmchen gemacht hätte. Wobei das nicht so ganz stimmt. Er hatte sie alle!

René Koch selbst kleidete sich gern als Drag Queen, und da war der Schritt von der Selbst- zur Fremdstilisierung nicht groß. Eine Lebenseinstellung, die Berufung wurde und sich natürlich auch in der Wahl des Objektes seiner Begierde widerspiegelt. Anlass gab ein wahrlich besonderer Lippenstift: der Volkslippenstift von Hildegard Knef. Sie hatte im Jahr 1952 begonnen, Werbung dafür zu machen, und als der damalige Chefvisagist von Yves Saint Laurent die Diva in den 70ern kennenlernte, vermachte sie ihm ihr liebstes Stück. Seither zieht Mr. Lipstick, wie er in Fachkreisen liebevoll genannt wird, die Lippenverzierer förmlich magnetisch an. Aus aller Welt kommen sie zu ihm, 250 Exemplare sind es bereits, in allen erdenklichen Formen und Farben. Darunter edelsteinbesetzte Lippenstifte, historische Make-up-Etuis und einstige Alltagsprodukte wie der DDR-Volkslippenstift, aber auch Raritäten wie Lippenstifte aus dem Barock und Lippenfarbe aus Japan und Afrika.

The only one of its kind in the world. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the museum’s director is a fan of good looks and a virtuoso of facial beautification. There is hardly a celebrity who has not made the acquaintance of his make-up brushes and sponges. To be honest - he’s had them all!

René Koch himself liked to dress up as a drag queen, and the step from self-stylisation to external stylisation was not a big one. An attitude to life that became a vocation and which is naturally also reflected in the choice of the object of his desire. The opportunity was provided by a truly special lipstick: Hildegard Knef's "Volkslippenstift". She began advertising it in 1952, and when the then chief make-up artist at Yves Saint Laurent met the diva in the 70s, she bequeathed him her most beloved piece. Since then, Mr. Lipstick, as he is affectionately known in expert circles, has been a magnet for those with an interest in the embellishment of lips. Lipsticks in every imaginable shape and colour are sent to him from all over the world, and he now has over 250 of them. These include gem-studded lipsticks, historical make-up cases and former everyday products such as the GDR's popular "Volkslippenstift" ('People's Lipstick'), as well as rarities such as lipsticks from the Baroque period and lip paints from Japan and Africa.
